Born on September 21, 1989, in sunny Miramar, Florida, Jason Joel Desrouleaux is an American singer, songwriter, and dancer of Haitian descent. As a teenager, he took his songwriting skills to the next level by writing songs for other artists like Diddy, Sean Kingston, and Lil Wayne, while working as a songwriter and producer at Cash Money Records.
Derulo didn’t just stop at writing songs for others. He attended performing arts schools like The American Musical and Dramatic Academy to hone his skills as a singer and dancer. He even performed in theatre productions of “Ragtime” and “Smokey Joe’s Café”. His hard work and dedication paid off when he won the grand prize on the 2006 season finale of the musical television show “Showtime at the Apollo”.
It was after this win that music producer J.R. Rotem discovered Derulo and signed him to his record label, Beluga Heights Records. This eventually became part of Warner Bros. Records, where Derulo went on to release hit after hit.

Music and Television Career
Jason Derulo’s debut single “Whatcha Say” came out on August 4, 2009, and it was a hit. Produced by Rotem with help from Fuego, the track heavily sampled Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek”. By November of that year, “Whatcha Say” had hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, after debuting at No. 54. That success got him working on his debut album, “Jason Derulo”, which dropped on March 2, 2010.
The album did well in the UK and Irish Albums Charts, with some of its songs featured as an opening act for Lady Gaga’s The Monster Ball Tour. His second single, “In My Head”, was released on December 8, 2009, and made it to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The third single, “Ridin’ Solo”, followed on April 26, 2010, and peaked at No. 9.
Derulo’s second album, “Future History”, came out on September 27, 2011, with the lead single “Don’t Wanna Go Home” hitting No. 1 in the UK and No. 5 in Australia. Unfortunately, Derulo broke one of his vertebrae while rehearsing in January 2012, causing him to cancel his UK tour. But he bounced back, appearing on “American Idol” in March of that year, where he announced a new project with fans to complete the lyrics for a new song titled “Undefeated”.
In August 2012, Derulo joined the first season of the Australian dance talent show “Everybody Dance Now” with Kelly Rowland. He also co-owns the record label Future History and signed Arlene Zelina in July 2012. In 2013, he released his third album, “Tattoos”, which included the hit singles “The Other Side” and “Talk Dirty”, which peaked at No. 18 and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.
Derulo kept going strong, releasing his fourth studio album “Everything Is 4” in May 2015. He also joined the judging panel of the 12th season of the dance talent show “So You Think You Can Dance” in January 2015. He then released his greatest hits album, “Platinum Hits”, in July 2016, which included a brand-new song “Kiss the Sky”.
