Early Life and Career Beginnings
If you love salsa and Latin pop music, chances are you’ve heard of Marc Anthony. But did you know that his real name is Marco Antonio Muñiz, just like the famous Mexican singer? Pretty cool, huh? Marc was born on September 16, 1968, in New York City to Puerto Rican parents, Guillermina and Felipe. He’s the youngest of eight siblings, and he grew up in East Harlem, where he was raised Roman Catholic.
Music runs in Marc’s blood, and he inherited his talent from his father, who taught him how to sing in both Spanish and English. As a kid, Marc began his musical journey by listening to a variety of genres, including freestyle music and underground New York house music. Later on, he worked as a session vocalist and songwriter for popular groups like Menudo and the Latin Rascals. But to avoid confusion with his namesake, he started going by the name Marc Anthony.
Over time, Marc developed his unique style of salsa, which blended elements of African American and urban music. And his hard work paid off as he gained fame and recognition as a talented artist. Today, he’s one of the most famous Puerto Rican-American singers in the world, known for hits like “Vivir Mi Vida” and “You Sang to Me.”
If you’re a fan of salsa or Latin music, then you’re probably familiar with the iconic artist, Marc Anthony. Did you know that before he became a salsa superstar, he started his career in freestyle music? It’s true! Anthony’s debut album, “Rebel,” was released in 1988 on Bluedog Records.
Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, Anthony worked on various projects, including writing and producing the hit song “Boy I’ve Been Told” for Sa-Fire. He also collaborated with other artists like Chrissy I-eece, Little Louie Vega, and Todd Terry, and featured on popular freestyle club tracks like “Ride On The Rhythm” and “Time.”
Although he was initially hesitant to enter the salsa scene, Anthony eventually changed his mind and released his Spanish-language debut album, “Otra Nota,” in 1993 with RMM Records. He followed this up with the critically acclaimed “Todo a su tiempo” in 1995, which earned him a Billboard award for Hot Tropical Artist of the Year and a Grammy nomination.
“Contra La Coriente” came next in 1997, and its hit single “Y Hubo Alguien” made history as the first salsa song to top the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. The album was also the first salsa album ever to enter the Billboard 200 chart.
In 1999, Anthony switched to Sony Records, and his self-titled English-language album debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200. It went on to earn triple platinum certification, with the song “I Need to Know” being nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Anthony continued to release successful albums, including “Libre” (2001), “Mended” (2002), “Amar Sin Mentiras” (2004), “Valio la Pena” (2004), “El Cantante” (2007), “Iconos” (2010), “3.0” (2013), and “Opus” (2019).
