Early Life
Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, was born on July 27, 1992, in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. His dad, Sonstar, is from Barbados, and his mom, Luella, was from Curaçao. Unfortunately, Luella passed away from a rare disease when Tory was just 11 years old. Tory has since shared that he had a tough time dealing with his mother’s death and often acted out. Music ended up being an outlet for him to express his emotions and anger.
When Tory was 4 or 5 years old, the family moved to Montreal and later relocated to Miami, Florida. After Luella passed away, Sonstar became a missionary and an ordained minister, which led to the family moving around a lot. Eventually, Sonstar remarried and moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia. This is where Tory was given the nickname “Lanez” by his friend Hakeem because of his love for seeking thrills and running through the streets.
Tory had some behavioral issues when he was younger, which led to him moving in with a cousin in Queens, New York, in 2006. After that, he went to live with his grandmother in Toronto, but things didn’t work out there either. In an interview with “XXL” magazine, Tory revealed that he ended up living downtown with three guys he didn’t know very well. During that time, he had to fight almost every day, which he says taught him how to be a man and fend for himself.
Tory Lanez started rapping a few years after his mother’s passing and gave himself the nickname “Notorious” as a tribute to Notorious B.I.G. Eventually, he began going by the name “Tory Lanez.” He quit school at age 16 and started performing at outdoor concerts.

Personal Life
So, you may have heard about rapper Tory Lanez and the drama surrounding him lately. Last July, he was at a house party that got pretty wild. The cops showed up and found a hidden gun in his car, which led to his arrest. Megan Thee Stallion, another rapper, was also in the car and had an injury to her foot.
At first, people thought it was from broken glass, but later Megan revealed that Tory had actually shot her. Not cool, Tory. In October, he got hit with three serious charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and a judge put a protective order in place, telling him to stay away from Megan and not contact her.
Fast forward to August of the next year, and Tory got himself in even more trouble by breaking that protective order. He had to cough up $250,000 for bail, which is a pretty hefty price tag. Tory has had beef with other rappers too, like Drake, Jacquees, and Joyner Lucas. But, he and Jacquees put their differences aside and even went on tour together after squashing their short-lived feud.
On a lighter note, Tory has a son named Kai who was born back in 2017. It’s good to know that he has some positive things going on in his life, amidst all the legal drama and feuds.
